Ten Benefits of PureLand Practice

The benefits are many and the list here is just some of the benefits gained by those who earnestly recite "Amitabha Buddha / 阿弥陀佛 " and they are as follows:

(1) The protection of all heavenly beings, day and night.

(2) The protection of 25 great Bodhisattvas, including GuanYin Pusa
or Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.

(3) The protection and blessings of all Buddhas.

(4) No evil ghosts or poisonous snakes can harm you.

(5) Flood, fire, weapons will not harm you and disaster will be averted.

(6) The karmic result of past wrong doings, mischiefs will be eliminated.

(7) One will have no nightmares, only peaceful and good dreams in which
you may see Amitabha Buddha's dignified golden image.

(8) One will be happy, good looking, energetic, healthy and successful.

(9) One will be delighted and well respected by people.

(10) When one's life is near the end, one will not be afraid, not confused
and will be calm with a right frame of mind. The Three Sages of the
World of Utmost Bliss shall come to receive you with a golden platform
and lead you to the World of Utmost Bliss and you will enjoy utmost
happiness, will practise with no risk of regression till attaining
Enlightenment.

The 48 Great Vows of Amituofo

The 48 Vows of Amitabha Buddha (From 'Infinite Life Sutra')
阿弥陀佛四十八愿 《 无量寿经 》
Translated from Sanskrit into Chinese during the Cao-Wei dynasty by the Tripitaka Master Samghavarman from India (曹魏天竺三藏康僧铠译), with names of vows given by the Eighth Chinese Pure Land Patriarch Master Lianchi (净宗八祖莲池大师). Translated from Chinese into English by Shen Shi’an (沈时安) with reference to various sources.

第一国中无三恶道愿:设我得佛,国有地狱饿鬼畜生者,不取正觉。

[01] Vow of No Three Evil Realms in Pure Land: If, when I attain Buddhahood, my land should have [realms of] hell-beings, hungry ghosts or animals, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of freedom from evil realms upon reaching Pure Land]

第二不复更生恶道愿:设我得佛,国中天人,寿终以后,复更三恶道者,不取正觉。

[02] Vow of No Rebirth in Evil Realms: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should still be reborn into the three evil realms after the end of their lives, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of freedom from evil realms upon leaving Pure Land]

第三各得真金色身愿:设我得佛,国中天人,不悉真金色者,不取正觉。

[03] Vow of Each Attaining Pure Gold Coloured Body: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not all be the colour of pure gold, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of great physical magnificence]

第四形色无有好丑愿:设我得佛,国中天人,形色不同,有好丑者,不取正觉。

[04] Vow of Shape and Form Without Beauty or Ugliness: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should be different in shape and form, with beautiful or ugly ones, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of equal (and equanimous) physical magnificence]

第五生者皆得宿命愿:设我得佛:国中天人,不识宿命,下至知百千亿那由他诸劫事者,不取正觉。

[05] Vow of All Attaining Recollection of Past Lives: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not recollect past lives, at least knowing all the events which occurred during the previous hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of kalpas, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of recollection of many past lives]

第六皆得天眼彻视愿:设我得佛,国中天人,不得天眼,下至见百千亿那由他诸佛国者,不取正觉。

[06] Vow of All Attaining the Heavenly Eye with Penetrative Seeing: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not attain the heavenly eye, that sees at least a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of sight of many Buddha-lands]

第七皆得天耳彻听愿:设我得佛,国中天人,不得天耳,下至闻百千亿那由他诸佛所说,不悉受持者,不取正觉。

[07] Vow of All Attaining the Heavenly Ear with Penetrative Hearing: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not attain the heavenly ear, that hears the teachings of at least a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddhas, and should not sincerely receive, remember and uphold all of them, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of hearing of the teachings of many Buddhas]

第八皆得知他心念愿:设我得佛,国中天人,不得见他心智,下至知百千亿那由他诸佛国中众生心念者,不取正觉。

[08] Vow of All Attaining Knowledge of Others’ Thoughts: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not possess the wisdom from knowing the thoughts of others, of at least all beings in a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of knowledge of the thoughts of beings in many Buddha-lands]

第九皆得神足飞行愿:设我得佛,国中天人,不得神足,于一念顷,下至不能超过百千亿那由他诸佛国者,不取正觉。

[09] Vow of All Attaining Divine Feet (Supernormal Flight Travel): If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not attain divine feet to travel in one instant of thought to beyond at least a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of ability to travel swiftly to many Buddha-lands]

第十不起贪计身见愿:设我得佛,国中天人,若起想念贪计身者,不取正觉。

[10] Vow of No Arising of Attachment to Body [or Self]: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should give rise to thoughts of attachment to body [or self], may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of freedom from attachment to body (or self)]

第十一正定必至涅槃愿:设我得佛,国中天人,不住定聚,必至灭度者,不取正觉。

[11] Vow of Dwelling in the Definitely Assured State until Attainment of Nirvana [of Buddhahood]: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not dwell in the Definitely Assured State until Nirvana is attained, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of the Definitely Assured State until Nirvana]

第十二光明遍照十方愿:设我得佛,光明有能限量,下至不照百千亿那由他诸佛国者,不取正觉。

[12] Vow of Light Pervading and Illuminating the Ten Directions: If, when I attain Buddhahood, my light should be limited, unable to illuminate at least a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of blessings from Amitabha Buddha’s light of compassion, merits and wisdom]

第十三寿命同佛永久愿:设我得佛,寿命有能限量,下至百千亿那由他劫者,不取正觉。

[13] Vow of Everlasting Lifespan Similar to [Amitabha] Buddha: If, when I attain Buddhahood, [my] life-span[s] should be limited, even to at least a hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of kalpas, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of immeasurable benefits from Amitabha Buddha for indefinite time]

第十四声闻广多无量愿:设我得佛,国中声闻有能计量,乃至三千大千世界众生悉成缘觉,于百千劫悉共计校,知其数者,不取正觉。

[14] Vow of Immeasurable Shravakas: If, when I attain Buddhahood, the number of the shravakas in my land could be calculable, even if the beings in the three-thousandfold, great-thousandfold world system should all become pratyekabuddhas and count them all for a hundred thousand kalpas could know their number, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of birth in Pure Land despite number]

第十五寿命修短随意愿:设我得佛,国中天人, 寿命无能限量,除其本愿修短自在。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[15] Vow of Shortening Lifespan According to Aspiration: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not have unlimited lifespans, except when they wish to shorten them freely according to their original vows, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of immeasurable lifespan that can be changed at will]

第十六国中无不善名愿:设我得佛,国中天人,乃至闻有不善名者,不取正觉。

[16] Vow of No Name of Non-Virtue in Pure Land: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should even hear of the name of non-virtue, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of freedom from evil influences]

第十七诸佛称名赞叹愿:设我得佛,十方世界无量诸佛,不悉咨嗟称我名者,不取正觉。

[17] Vow of Name Being Proclaimed and Highly Praised by All Buddhas: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all immeasurable Buddhas in the worlds of the ten directions should not all praise and proclaim my Name (Amituofo), may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of knowledge of the excellence of Pure Land through all Buddhas]

第十八十念皆生我国愿:设我得佛,十方众生,至心信乐,欲生我国,乃至十念,若不生者,不取正觉。唯除五逆,诽谤正法。

[18] Vow of All Being Born in Pure Land with Ten Moments of Mindfulness: If, when I attain Buddhahood, beings of the ten directions with complete [wholehearted/single-minded] sincerity [至心], firm faith [确信] and joyful devotion [爱乐] who desire to be born in my land, and are mindful [of my Name: Amituofo] for even ten moments should not be born there, may I not attain perfect awakening. Excluded are those who did the five gravest offenses and slandered against the right Dharma [unless they repent and practise in time with the Three Provisions]. 第十九勤修我皆接引愿:设我得佛,十方众生,发菩提心,修诸功德,至心发愿,欲生我国,临寿终时,假令不与大众围绕现其人前者,不取正觉。

[19] Vow of Guiding All Who Practise Diligently: If, when I attain Buddhahood, beings in the ten directions who awaken to Bodhicitta, cultivate various merits, and with complete sincerity desire to be born in my land, should not, when they near the end of this life, see me with a great multitude [of sages] surrounding before them, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of birth in Pure Land with guidance]

第二十系念必得往生愿: 设我得佛,十方众生闻我名号,系念我国,植众德本,至心回向,欲生我国,不果遂者,不取正觉。

[20] Vow of Assured Birth in Pure Land via Continual Mindfulness: If, when I attain Buddhahood, beings in the ten directions who have heard my Name (Amituofo) are continually mindful of my land, plant many roots of merits, and with complete sincerity dedicate them with the desire to be born in my land should not fulfill this aspiration, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of birth in Pure Land via continual mindfulness]

第二十一各具三十二相愿:设我得佛,国中天人,不悉成满三十二大人相者,不取正觉。

[21] Vow of Having Thirty-two Characteristics: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not all be fully endowed with the thirty-two physical characteristics of a great human, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of great human form]

第二十二菩萨一生补处愿:设我得佛,他方佛土诸菩萨众,来生我国,究竟必至一生补处。除其本愿自在所化,为众生故,披弘誓铠,积累德本,度脱一切。游诸佛国,修菩萨行,供养十方诸佛如来,开化恒沙无量众生,使立无上正真之道。超出常伦诸地之行,现前修习普贤之德。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[22] Vow of Bodhisattvas Attaining Stage of Becoming Buddhas After One More Life: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in the Buddha-lands of other directions who are born in my land should not ultimately and unfailingly reach the Stage of Becoming Buddhas after One More Life, may I not attain perfect awakening. Excepted are those who wish to manifest freely for [helping] beings according to their original vows. Wearing the armour of great vows, they accumulate roots of merits, deliver all, visit all Buddha-lands to cultivate the bodhisattva practices, make offerings to all Buddhas Tathagatas throughout the ten directions, awaken and transform immeasurable beings as numerous as the sands of the River Ganges, and establish them on the unsurpassable, right and true path. They transcend the ordinary practices of bodhisattvas of all grounds, manifest the practices of all the bodhisattva stages, and cultivate the merits of Samantabhadra [Bodhisattva]. 第二十三一时普供诸佛愿:设我得佛,国中菩萨,承佛神力,供养诸佛,一食之顷,不能遍至无量无数亿那由他诸佛国者,不取正觉。

[23] Vow of Widely Making Offerings to All Buddhas in One Instant: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land, through Buddha’s transcendent power, should not be able to make offerings to all Buddhas pervading immeasurable and innumerable kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands in as short a time as it takes for a meal, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of ability to make offerings swiftly to all Buddhas]
第二十四供具自皆如意愿:设我得佛,国中菩萨,在诸佛前,现其德本,诸所求欲供养之具,若不如意者,不取正觉。

[24] Vow of Providing All Offerings as Wished: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land should not be able to, before all Buddhas, manifest their roots of merits by making all kinds of offerings according to their wishes, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of ability to make offerings as wished to all Buddhas]

第二十五菩萨演一切智愿:设我得佛,国中菩萨,不能演说一切智者,不取正觉。

[25] Vow of Bodhisattvas Expounding (with) All-Knowing Wisdom: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land should not be able to expound (with) all-knowing wisdom, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of ability to expound the Dharma with perfect wisdom]

第二十六菩萨得金刚身愿:设我得愿,国中菩萨,不得金刚那罗延身者,不取正觉。

[26] Vow of Bodhisattvas Attaining Vajra Body: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land should not be endowed with the Vajra body of Narayana, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of indestructible form (that is free from disease)]

第二十七万物悉皆殊特愿:设我得佛,国中天人,一切万物,严净光丽,形色特殊,穷微极妙,无能称量。其诸众生乃至逮得天眼,有能明了辨其名数者,不取正觉。

[27] Vow of Everything Being Sublime (and Special): If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land, and all its myriad objects will be majestically pure, bright and resplendent, with sublime (and special) shapes and colours, that are so detailedly exquisite and ultimately wondrous, that they cannot be named or counted. If even all beings attain the heavenly eye should be able to fully understand and discern their names and numbers, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of life with pure adornments]

第二十八菩萨道树普见愿:设我得佛,国中菩萨,乃至少功德者,不能知见其道场树,无量光色高四百万里,不取正觉。

[28] Vow of All Bodhisattvas Seeing the Bodhimanda(la) Tree: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land, even those with little merits, should not be able to know and see the [Bodhi] tree of its Bodhimanda(la) [place of practice and enlightenment], which has immeasurable lights and colours that is four million li in height, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of realisation of the Dharma from the Bodhi tree]

第二十九受经普得智辩愿:设我得佛,国中菩萨,若受读经法,讽诵持说,而不得辩才智慧者,不取正觉。

[29] Vow of All Receiving Sutras and Attaining Wisdom and Eloquence: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land who receive, study, recite, memorise, uphold and expound the sutras should not attain eloquence (in debate) and wisdom, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of wisdom and eloquence (in debate)]

第三十智辩无有限量愿:设我得佛,国中菩萨,智慧辩才,若可限量者,不取正觉。

[30] Vow of Unlimited Wisdom and Eloquence: If, when I attain Buddhahood, the wisdom and eloquence (in debate) of bodhisattvas in my land should be limited, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of unlimited wisdom and eloquence (in debate)]

第三十一净国照见十方愿:设我得佛,国土清净,皆悉照见十方一切无量无数不可思议诸佛世界,犹如明镜;睹其面像,若不尔者,不取正觉。

[31] Vow of Reflection of the Pure Lands of the Ten Directions: If, when I attain Buddhahood, my land will be peaceful and pure, reflecting all immeasurable, innumerable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten directions, as though seeing the image of one’s face in a clear mirror. If this is not so, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of sight of all Buddha-lands]

第三十二严饰超诸天人愿:设我得佛,自地以上,至于虚空,宫殿楼观,池流华树,国中所有一切万物,皆以无量杂宝,百千种香,而共合成。严饰奇妙,超诸天人。其香普薰十方世界,菩萨闻者,皆修佛行。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[32] Vow of Majestic Adornments Surpassing that of Gods and Humans: If, when I attain Buddhahood, from the ground to above, even to the sky, palaces, pavilions, ponds, streams, flowers, trees, and all myriad objects, will be composed from combinations of immeasurable variegated treasures and a hundred thousand kinds of fragrances. These marvellously majestic adornments surpass all [things] heavenly and human. These fragrances universally pervade worlds of the ten directions, and when bodhisattvas smell them, they all cultivate Buddhas’ practices. If this should not be so, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of inspiration to cultivate Buddhas’ practices]

第三十三蒙光触身获益愿:设我得佛,十方无量不可思议诸佛世界众生之类,蒙我光明触其体者,身心柔软,超过天人,若不尔者,不取正觉。

[33] Vow of Receiving Light that Benefits Upon Touching the Body: If, when I attain Buddhahood, beings of all kinds in all immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten directions, who receive my light that touches their bodies should not experience [peace, bliss,] gentleness and softness (tenderness) of body and mind that surpasses that of gods and humans, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of Amituofo’s blessings via his light]

第三十四皆得法忍总持愿:设我得佛,十方无量不可思议诸佛世界众生之类,闻我名字,不得菩萨无生法忍,诸深总持者,不取正觉。

[34] Vow of All Attaining Forbearance of Non-Arising of Dharmas and Dharanis: If, when I attain Buddhahood, beings of all kinds in all immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten directions, who have heard my Name (Amituofo), should not gain the bodhisattva's forbearance [insight] of the non-arising of all dharmas and acquire various profound dharanis, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas and acquiring of dharanis]

第三十五信乐永离女身愿:设我得佛,十方无量不可思议诸佛世界,其有女人闻我名字,欢喜信乐,发菩提心,厌恶女身,寿终之后,复为女像者,不取正觉。

[35] Vow of Eternal Freedom from Female Bodily Form: If, when I attain Buddhahood, women in all immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten directions, who have heard my Name (Amituofo), rejoice with firm faith [确信] and joyful devotion [爱乐], awaken to Bodhicitta, and detest their female bodily form, should after the end of their lives be reborn again with female form, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of freedom from female form]

第三十六勤修必成佛道愿:设我得佛,十方无量不可思议诸佛世界,诸菩萨众,闻我名字,寿终之后,常修梵行,至成佛道。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[36] Vow of Definite Buddhahood with Diligent Practice: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in all immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten directions, who have heard my Name (Amituofo), should not, after the end of their lives, continually cultivate practices for purification until they reach Buddhahood, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of ability to continually practise purification until Buddhahood]

第三十七归依感动天人愿: 设我得佛,十方无量不可思议诸佛世界,诸天人民,闻我名字,五体投地,稽首作礼,欢喜信乐,修菩萨行。诸天世人,莫不致敬。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[37] Vow of Gods and Humans Being Touched to Take Refuge: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all gods and humans in all immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten directions, who have heard my Name (Amituofo) should not fully prostrate themselves [with their five limbs (hands, legs and head)] on the ground to revere me, rejoice with firm faith [确信] and joyful devotion [爱乐], and cultivate Bodhisattva practices, and be paid homage to by all gods and humans of all worlds, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of homage by gods and humans]

第三十八妙服自然在身愿: 设我得佛,国中天人,欲得衣服,随念即至。如佛所赞应法妙服,自然在身。若有裁缝染治浣濯者,不取正觉。

[38] Vow of Wondrous Clothing Naturally Manifesting on the Body: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not obtain clothing, as soon as such a desire arises, and if these wondrous Dharma clothing as praised and provided by the Buddhas should not naturally manifest on their bodies, and if these clothing should need sewing, bleaching, dyeing or washing, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of wondrous clothing]

第三十九受乐同于漏尽愿: 设我得佛,国中天人所受快乐,不如漏尽比丘者,不取正觉。

[39] Vow of Experiencing Bliss Similar to Those with Ended Outflows: If, when I attain Buddhahood, gods and humans in my land should not experience bliss similar to that of monks who have ended all outflows, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of bliss similar to Arhats]

第四十随意见诸佛国愿: 设我得佛,国中菩萨,随意欲见十方无量严净佛士,应时如愿,于宝树中,皆悉照见。犹如明镜,睹其面像。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[40] Vow of Seeing All Buddha-lands as Wished: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land who desire to see immeasurable pure, clear and bright Buddha-lands of the ten directions, should not be able to, instantly as they wish, see all of them illuminated in the jewel trees, as though seeing one's face reflected in a clear mirror, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of sight of all Buddha-lands]

第四十一闻名诸根具足愿: 设我得佛,他方国土诸菩萨众,闻我名字,至于得佛,诸根缺陋不具足者,不取正觉。

[41] Vow of Completion of All Sense Faculties After Hearing Name: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in the lands of other directions who hear my Name (Amituofo) should, until they attain Buddhahood, have any missing, inferior or incomplete sense faculties, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of complete sense faculties]

第四十二悉得清净解脱愿: 设我得佛,他方国土诸菩萨众,闻我名字,皆悉逮得清净解脱三昧。住是三昧,一发意顷,供养无量不可思议诸佛世尊,而不失定意。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[42] Vow of All Attaining Pure Liberation: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in the lands of other directions who hear my Name (Amituofo) should not all attain the Samadhi of Pure Liberation and, and while abiding within, should not be able to make offerings in one instant of thought to immeasurable and inconceivable Buddhas World-Honoured Ones without losing concentration, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of Samadhi of Pure Liberation while making offerings to immeasurable Buddhas]

第四十三闻名生处尊贵愿: 设我得佛,他方国土诸菩萨众,闻我名字,寿终之后,生尊贵家。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[43] Vow of Attaining Noble Birth After Hearing Name: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in the lands of other directions who hear my Name (Amituofo) should not be reborn into noble families after the end of their lives, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of noble rebirth]

第四十四修行具足德本愿: 设我得佛,他方国土诸菩萨众,闻我名字,欢喜踊跃,修菩萨行,具足德本。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[44] Vow of Cultivation of Complete Merits: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in the lands of other directions who hear my Name (Amituofo), should not rejoice enthusiastically, and cultivate the bodhisattva practices until their merits are complete, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of complete merits]

第四十五皆得三昧见佛愿: 设我得佛,他方国土诸菩萨众,闻我名字,皆悉逮得普等三昧,住是三昧,至于成佛,常见无量不可思议一切诸佛。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[45] Vow of All Attaining Samadhi and Sight of Buddhas: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in the lands of other directions who hear my Name (Amituofo), should not all attain the Samadhi of Universal Equality, in which they dwell until Buddhahood, and always see all immeasurable and inconceivable Buddhas, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of Samadhi of Universal Equality and sight of all Buddhas]

第四十六自然得闻妙法愿: 设我得佛,国中菩萨,随其志愿所欲闻法,自然得闻。若不尔者,不取正觉。

[46] Vow of Naturally Hearing the Wondrous Dharma: If, when I attain Buddhahood, bodhisattvas in my land will naturally hear whatever Dharma they wish. If this is not so, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of hearing Dharma as wished]

第四十七即得不退转地愿: 设我得佛,他方国土诸菩萨众,闻我名字,不即得至不退转者,不取正觉。

[47] Vow of Instantly Attaining Ground of Non-Retrogression: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in the lands of other directions, who hear my Name (Amituofo), should not instantly attain [up to] Non-retrogression, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of non-retrogression]

第四十八即得诸忍究竟愿: 设我得佛,他方国土诸菩萨众,闻我名字,不即得至第一、第二、第三法忍,于诸佛法不能即得不退转者,不取正觉。

[48] Vow of Instantly Attaining All and Complete Forbearances: If, when I attain Buddhahood, all bodhisattvas in the lands of other directions who hear my Name (Amituofo), should not instantly attain the first, second and third Dharma forbearance [insights into the nature of dharmas], abide in the Dharma realised by all Buddhas, and instantly attain Non-retrogression, may I not attain perfect awakening. [Attainment of all forbearances]

造佛形像之不可思议功德

造佛形像之不可思议功德,世尊于诸大小乘经典中多有详示。兹援引弘一律师敬本诸经所说而概括的十大利益诠次如下:
一、从前所作种种罪过,轻者立即消灭,重者亦得转轻。
二、常得吉神拥护。一切瘟疫水火寇盗刀兵牢狱之灾,悉皆不受。
三、夙生怨对,咸蒙法益,而得解脱,永免寻仇报复之苦。
四、夜叉恶鬼,不能侵犯。毒蛇饿虎,不能为害。
五、心得安慰,日无险事,夜无恶梦。颜色光泽,气力充盛,所作吉利。  
六、至心奉法,虽无希求。自然衣食丰足,家庭和睦,福寿绵长。
七、所言所行,人天欢喜。任到何方,常为多众倾诚爱戴,恭敬礼拜。
八、愚者转智,病者转健,困者转亨。为妇女者,报谢之日,捷转男身。  
九、永离恶道,受生善道。相貌端正,天资超越,福禄殊胜。
十、能为一切众生,种植善根。以众生心,作大福田,获无量胜果。所生之处,常得见佛闻法。
直至三慧宏开,六通亲证,速得成佛。

Mindful of the Buddha, Seeing the Buddha

《楞严经》:如果众生的心,能时时想念佛,时时忆念佛,纵然现在不能见到佛,将来必定会见到佛,因为离开佛已经不远了。

Surangama Sutra:
If one could always remember the Buddha, mindful about the Buddha , though he might not see the Buddha now, he will definitely see Him in the future. This is because he is already not far away from the Buddha. Amituofo.

Anger & Love have no limits...

While a man was polishing his new car, his 4 yr old son picked stone and scratched lines on the side of car. In anger, the man took the child's hand & hit it many times, not realizing he was using a wrench.

At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures. When the child saw his father...with painful eyes he asked 'Dad when will my fingers grow back?' Man was so hurt and speechless. He went back to car and kicked it many times. Devastated by his own actions.. sitting in front of the car he looked at the scratches, child had written 'LOVE YOU DAD'. Next day that man committed suicide...

Anger and Love have no limits...Always remember that- Things are to be used and people are to be loved, but the problem in today's world is that, People are used and things are loved..?

Heart of Gratitude

Heart of Gratitude

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up
a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the
hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped
them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words.
He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the
blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?"

The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a
different way." I wrote: "Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it."
Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said
the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story:
* Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative.
Think differently and positively.
* When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you
have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret.
Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future
without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.
* The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling……And
even more beautiful is, knowing that you are the reason behind
it!

The Merits from Life/Animal Liberation

The merits from life liberation are varied and boundless. Here are some, according to the Buddha and many Venerable masters -

1. One will be unharmed by war or die by violence.
2. One will attain longevity and healthiness with few illnesses.
(Many pains and illnesses come from the karma of killing.)
3. One will be unharmed by natural disasters and accidents.
4. One will have abundant offsprings for future generations.
5. One will easily attain what one wishes.
6. One will prosper in official positions without obstacles.
7. One will be a source of gratitude to other beings and a source of joy to the Buddhas.
8. One will dissolve vengeance, and vanquish evil influences and worries.
9. One will experience joy and peacefulness in all seasons.
10. One will be easier born in Pureland.

practising repentance, vegetarianism and single-minded chanting of "Namo Amituofo")

Teachings by Ajahn Chah

First you understand the Dharma with your thoughts. If you begin to understand it, you will practise it. And if you practise it, you will begin to see it. And if you see it,you are the Dharma and you have the joy of the Buddha.

Theory and practice - the first knows the name of a medicinal plant, and the second goes out to find it and uses it.

Be careful about observing our precepts. Virtue is a sense of shame. What we have doubts about, we should not do or say. This is virtue. Purity is being beyond all doubts.

Amituofo is also called by the following names:
1) Buddha of Infinite Life,
2) Buddha of Infinite Light,
3) Buddha of Boundless Light,
4)Buddha of Unhindered Light,
5) Buddha of Incomparable Light,
6) Buddha of Light of Wisdom,
7) Buddha of Unceasing Light,
8) Buddha of Pure Light,
9) Buddha of Light of Joy,
10) Buddha of Light of Liberation,
11) Buddha of Light of Serenity,
12) Buddha of Light Outshining the Sun and the Moon.
13) Buddha of Inconceivable Light
If sentient beings encounter his light, their three defilements will be removed; they feel tenderness, joy and pleasure; and good thoughts arise. If sentient beings in the three realms of suffering see his light, they will all be relieved and freed from affliction. At the end of their lives, they all will be liberated.
